Portfolio Operations Team

The bench that does the work.

Slate Blue Capital's portfolio operations capability is staffed by sector specialists, functional operators, and a shared services team that supports every portfolio company. The model is intentionally deep rather than shallow: each sector lead is an operator with line responsibility, not a consultant.

Sector specialists

Operating leaders embedded at the sector level: real estate (residential, commercial, hospitality, senior living), infrastructure (energy, telecom, water, transportation), specialty finance, consumer, and conservation. Each sector lead chairs the relevant portco operating reviews and serves on the Investment Committee for new commitments within their domain.

Functional operators

Shared functional leads for finance, technology, talent, procurement, treasury, legal, and risk. These leads serve every portfolio company under standardized service-level agreements. The model lets a single portco draw on institutional-grade functions from day one without rebuilding them in-house.

Talent network

Curated bench of executive talent: CEOs, CFOs, COOs, and functional leaders available for placement at portfolio companies. Talent moves across portcos as roles open and as sector cycles shift. Compensation alignment travels with the executive.

Operating partners

Industry veterans with prior CEO or chair experience who serve on portco boards, lead sector-level diligence, and mentor portco leadership. Operating partners are not paid by the fund; they are aligned through co-investment in the relevant vehicle.

KPI Discipline

What we measure.

Every portfolio company reports against a sector-specific KPI dashboard reviewed quarterly by the sector specialist, the portco CEO, and the firm Investment Committee. Material variances trigger an out-of-cycle review with the Chief Risk Officer.

Operating KPIs

Revenue, gross margin, contribution margin, EBITDA, customer count, churn, occupancy, utilization, throughput. Sector-specific definitions documented and version-controlled.

Financial KPIs

Free cash flow conversion, net debt, debt service coverage, fixed charge coverage, working capital cycle, return on invested capital, covenant headroom.

Risk KPIs

Concentration ratios, counterparty exposure, key-person dependence, regulatory exposures, cyber posture, insurance coverage adequacy.

Human capital KPIs

Headcount, voluntary turnover, time-to-fill for critical roles, compensation versus market band, completion of compliance training.

Customer KPIs

Net Promoter Score where applicable, customer concentration, top-10 customer churn, customer acquisition cost versus lifetime value.

ESG KPIs

Reported quarterly against the framework described on the Responsible Investment page. Material exceptions escalated to the Investment Committee.

Shared Leverage

What every portco gets on day one.

Procurement

Consolidated purchasing across the platform: insurance, telecom, energy, IT, professional services, banking. Negotiated rates flow to each portco from day one.

Treasury

Banking architecture across Citi Bank, PNC Bank, and U.S. Bank. Cash concentration, sweep, foreign exchange, and payment rails available without portco rebuilding the stack.

Technology

Standardized enterprise resource planning, accounting, payroll, and reporting platforms. Cybersecurity baseline aligned with the firm Cybersecurity Policy.

Talent

Access to the firm talent network and executive bench. Shared recruiting, compensation benchmarking, and equity plan administration.

Risk and compliance

Independent Risk function, internal audit, and compliance program inherited from the firm. Each portco operates within the firm Risk Appetite Statement.

Capital

Access to the firm credit relationships, follow-on capital from the appropriate fund vehicle, and co-investment capacity from the Reserve Fund tier.

Case Study

WolfHaven: applying the model beyond capital.

WolfHaven is a non-profit animal sanctuary platform operated alongside Slate Blue Capital. It receives no dedicated capital from any fund vehicle. It is funded entirely by donations, grants, and the personal philanthropy of the founder. The operating model still applies: every sanctuary location has a written 100-day plan, a sector specialist (animal care, veterinary services, facilities), a quarterly KPI review covering animal intake, adoption rates, health outcomes, and donor stewardship, and is governed by the WolfHaven board under the same Code of Ethics that governs the firm. WolfHaven shows that the operating model is not a fee-extraction system; it is a discipline.
